13 Reasons Why (Jay Asher): summary of the novel

"13 Reasons Why" is a psychological novel, written by Jay Asher, published in 2007 in America and in 2008 in Italy by Mondadori. Teens are the protagonists of this novel, which takes place today and is set entirely in the corridors of a high school . The protagonist is Hannah Baker, a teenage student who decides to take her own life and somehow leave a testimony of her extreme gesture. Here enters the scene, Clay Jensen, Hannah's classmate, for whom she has always had a crush, who on returning from school, finds a box in front of the door addressed to her name, but without a sender. The box contains seven audio cassettes, on which Hannah has recorded 13 stories about the reasons that led her to commit suicide, each dedicated to a single person, whom she considers responsible, for the purpose of her crazy gesture. Thus begins a sort of human chain, so each of them will have to, once they have finished listening, send the package to the next recipient. The tapes follow one another between more or less serious accusations against as many friends or acquaintances until you get to Bryce Walker, who raped Hannah and that was a final final reason to give up on life. An entire tape, which Hannah only records to apologize, is also dedicated to Clay. Finally the last tape, the thirteenth is a recording of the interview Hannah had with the school psychologist, Porter, to which she explained about her suicidal instincts and the rape she suffered and to which the psychologist reacted, suggesting to turn the page. Following this interview, Hanna decided to commit suicide with an overdose of drugs.
